The IN-CROWD is an idea. You are the IN-CROWD when you are IN-formed, IN-spired and IN-volved in bringing social change to PBC.
WHO IS THE IN-CROWD?
The IN-CROWD is a shared idea of all of us in PBC working together. A critical component of the IN-CROWD is helping to build, expand, and empower upcoming local leadership as well as to unite with existing leaders and their organizations.
WHO ARE THE FOUNDERS OF THE IN-CROWD?
Angela Latoya Williams (Founder, Mothers Against Murderers Association, MAMA) – Ms Williams formed MAMA in 2003 after losing her nephew to senseless gun violence. MAMA helps bereaved mothers through the awful process of dealing with the pain of losing a child this way. Her selfless work has earned Angela the love and respect of the entire community.
Bishop, Dr. Phillip Dukes (Founder, Operation Restore) – Bishop Dukes is a man who has personally transformed from one of Riviera Beach’s most prominent drug dealers who has reversed his life to become a social reformer youth mentor who understands both the community mentality and the life style of the perpetrators. He has a no tolerance approach to the debilitating drug trade.
Prof. Dr. Robert Watson is an author, historian, media commentator, community activist. and history professor Lynn university. He has published over 40 books and approximately 200 scholarly articles, essays and chapters on topics in history and politics.
Steve West (Founder, Friends of MAMA – The IN-CROWD: Mr. West has been an entrepreneur and a leading activist for social justice since the early 1960s. Steve brings his experiences in the civil rights movement, fighting world hunger, and third-world development to the table.
WHY IS PALM BEACH COUNTY THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THE IN-CROWD?
Palm Beach County has many of the positive attributes to be a leader in peaceful and meaningful progress toward equal rights, equal justice, and equal opportunity. PBC can boast community involved and caring law enforcement, political leadership, clergy, NGOs and other community leadership. We already have a strong positive infrastructure to unify and build upon.
WHAT IS “POLITICAL WILL”?
Given PBC’s existing advantages, the initial mission is to build a united county, committed to the aspirations of America’s founders. The Pledge is the first step of many to follow.
WHY DO WE SEE A SHIFT IN THE WIND?
We are all victims of hundreds of years of conscious and unconscious discrimination. After the George Floyd murder millions of Americans are quickly awakening to the realization of the unbalanced playing field. Public opinion has shifted. The wind is finally at our back. It is imperative to realize the shift opens previously closed doors wide.
HOW DO WE BUILD THE BASE?
The fist step is to create the base through the Pledge and its follow up. This is done by county leadership to join hands for change. The leadership will then pass the Pledge to their constituencies. This will create a massive megaphone into the grassroots of the county. We will use the megaphone to reach the grass roots.
HOW DO WE BUILD UPON THE BASE?
Once begun we will publish a weekly letter to IN-form, IN-spire, and IN-volve community members. The feature of these communications will be specific actions that can be picked up and run with by the community.
WHAT IS A MOVEMENT?
will have a life of its own. Our role is catalyst and communicator. The work will be done by the residents and community leaders.
WHAT ABOUT FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS?
This aspect was left for the end because we are a totally volunteer group of PBC residents. We neither solicit of accept donations other than in kind assistance, particularly volunteer work. We do our best to help local front line organizations fundraise. When successful, 100% of the donations go to the organizations.
For access to the many doors of partners that we’ll want to include in the program, as well as for building the confidence of people who have been disappointed by unkept candidate’s promises in the past, the Pledge Program continues our tradition of non-partisanship. How do we get to support a good candidate without talking about them or their opposition. It’s seems an impossible conundrum. No problem.
We will have a Candidates Corner where candidates who make the Pledge will literally self-select. Every candidate for every office in PBC will receive an invitation to make the pledge. We will publish the names of the pledging candidates. The candidate Pledge will be worded even stronger. That will give the electorate a fool-proof written promise which would give a base line to hold candidates to their Pledge after the elections.
HOW ARE PLEDGES DELIVERED AND RETURNED?
There is no need for a Pledge to actually be returned. The power of the pledge is internal to the individual who is accountable only to themself. We only ask that the pledger fills out the 30 second form on the home page. or e-mails firstname.lastname@example.org with the words “I made the Pledge”.
WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR MY PARTICIPATION?
There are many community projects and programs that have existed for years. Other new efforts will be inaugurated. We anticipate some by folks who are inspired by making the Pledge. Programs and projects can be supported with financial or in-kind donations. Personal participation is encouraged. Building true bridges is one of the aims of the IN-CROWD..
WHAT KIND OF COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY PROJECTS ARE AVAILABLE?
The basic task is to build the POLITICAL WILL to take action. The pledge is a starting point to build a constituency. There are many silent resources already existing. They provide services and have the trust of their neighbors. We will champion existing activists and encourage development of new leadership within the neighborhoods and from the broader community as well. The first step is the job of the Pledge. From there it’s the job of the Pledgees. When people see the changes they will join the effort.
Here are a few examples of symbiotic actions that could be generated when county residents respond to the call of the IN-CROWD.
JOB OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM – work with county agencies and NGOs to enlist mentors to train residents for both skills and lifestyle choices. Involve employers to hire local workers.
ANTI GUN VIOLENCE PROGRAM – Work with elected officials, law enforcement, MAMA, Operation Restore, and other local NGO’s and community activists to rid the affected neighborhoods of drug trade. By working together in unity this is doable. We have a plan.
SPORTS PROGRAMS – empower current sports and other self-esteem building projects. Work with PAL and others doing this work or set up new programs.
PARTNER COMMUNITIES – Create opportunities for more established communities to partner and offer a hand up to underserved neighborhoods.
GET OUT THE VOTE PROGRAM – Work with League of Women Voters, Moms Demand Action, and others to provide info and training to help people register and to get to the polls. Also provide information so potential voters understand the issues that affect their lives. This includes assistance to Second Chance Voters.
PAINTING PARTIES – Let’s paint the town red. Well, maybe not red, but community painting parties will act as neon signs that something is happening in financially disadvantaged communities.
EMERGENCY RELEIF PROGRAMS – Work with existing NGOs, food banks, and donors to increase the volume and effectiveness of ongoing programs to expand their viability and reach.
COMMUNITY VEGIE GARDENS – provide opportunity to use vacant land to supply pride and food to the participating residents. We will empower existing groups.
THE BEAUTY OF FLOWERS – We will aquire and distribute donated flower seeds and make available to all neighborhood residents to grow inside and outside to beautify the environment and help engender neighborhood pride. This simple project becomes an effective sign board for transformation.
MUSIC, ART, SPORTS, POETRY, PERFORMANCE SHOWS AND CONTESTS – these events channel energy into positive outlets and add to community spirit. Until live events are back use ZOOM.
BUILD BRIDGES BETWEEN COMMUNITIES – The IN-CROWD is alive everywhere in the country.
REPLICATION – PBC’s success will predictably attract others to follow. We will assist them with a Manual and be available for free consultation.
CREATE YOUR OWN PROJECT – You can add to this list forever. Have a good idea? Inter IN-CROWD communication gives you a chance to contact existing programs for your participation. The street goes both ways if you want to start up an idea we’ll let everyone know. examples are to show the follow up steps to neighborhood transformation.
